Annual Pliny the Younger Day Fundraiser - NOON - CASHONLY

The wheels are turning and they can't slow down, because Pliny the Younger is rolling once again from Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, California, all the way to Philadelphia, PA.  Our humble home is the only market east of Denver to receive any Russian River beer at all, and what better way to celebrate our embarrassment of beer riches than by giving to those who need it most?

On Saturday, February 23 beginning at Noon, Monk's Cafe will host our annual Pliny the Younger Day Fundraiser to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit that we have supported for over 10 years.  You are invited to join us to taste this year's Pliny the Younger, plus a mind-bending draft list including bucket list beers from the world's greatest breweries.

As always, one hundred percent of the purchase price of all draft beer will benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand, and everyone who joins us will get their Pliny the Younger. This is a CASH ONLY fundraiser. Check out the draft list in progress and FAQ, below.

PLINY THE YOUNGER DAY FUNDRAISER FOR ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND

IN PROGRESS DRAFT LIST

Russian River Pliny the Younger (CA) This is why you’re here. Triple IPA loaded with hop flavor, bitterness and aromatics. Warrior, Amarillo, Simcoe, Centennial, CTZ, Chinook, Crystal and Citra hops were added. A portion of PtY was fermented in Open-Top Fermenters in Windsor! 1st brewed in 2004 and the basic recipe has remained intact, but Vinnie tweaks it a bit every year with that year’s barley & hop crops. 10.25%abv

Russian River Pliny The Elder (CA) This is the original Double IPA, made by mistake, natch. More hops balanced by bigger malt. Aromas of grapefruit dominate. Finishes surprisingly dry. 8%abv

Russian River Blind Pig IPA (CA) Perhaps my favorite West Coast IPA. Solid hop aromas and finish backed up by the perfect balance of malt. 6.1%abv

Russian River Consecration 2016 Vintage (CA) A brown ale aged in a Cabernet Sauvignon barrel (Silver Oak) for six months. Fresh currants added. I get the beer, the barrel, the wine and the fruit. This is one easy drinking beer, but be careful, it weighs in at 10%abv. This really rocks!

Russian River Damnation (CA) This is the new and improved version of the original, Duvel inspired, Damnation. Less banana, more apple/pear notes. More yeast-driven spiciness. Much drier than the original. 7.5%abv

Russian River STS Pils (CA) A classic, unfiltered, European-style Pilsner. Straw in color. Hop forward with a mild malt foundation, distinct lager yeast characteristic, and a dry, bitter finish. A World-Class Pilsner. Perfectly balance and oh, so quaffable. Seriously…try this! 5.35%abv

Russian River Salvation (CA) A new recipe that starts as a Golden Ale, but Vinnie uses a 100% Brettanomyces primary fermentation. Just a hint of sour. Finishes very dry along the lines of its inspiration – Brasserie De La Senne’s Taras Boulba. 4.7%abv.

Russian River Supplication (CA) Brown ale aged in French oak pinot noir barrels for 6 to 18 months. Vinnie then blends these barrels into this magic elixir. He adds fresh sour cherries and three “wild” yeast strains: brettanomyces, lactobacillus & pediococcus I get malt, oak, wine, cherries, and a subtle pineapple note from the brett. 7.2%abv.

Russian River Temptation (CA) Blonde ale aged one year in a Chardonnay barrel with brettanomyces. 7.75%abv

Cantillon 20 Ans d’Amitié (Belgium) A special blend to celebrate 20 years of friendship between the Cantillon/Van Roy & the Monk’s families. A blend of Nath & Lou Pepe Framboise. A rustic, yet elegant lambic.

Cantillon Classic Gueuze (Belgium) Traditional gueuze; that is, a blend of one-, two- and three-year old lambic. Dry, austere and classic indeed. 5%abv

Allagash Metropole (ME) A golden sour ale aged for 18 months in oak barrels that previously held port wine. Balanced malt and tartness play off oak an aromas of port. 10.7%abv

De La Senne Taras Boulba (Belgium) A truly refreshing session ale. Blond in color with a bitter, dry finish. 4.5%abv

Hair of the Dog Adam from the Stone (OR) This is Adam, a rich and smoky beer with notes of chocolate and dark fruit that is aged for 8 weeks in a concrete egg. 10%abv

Lost Abbey Cuvee de Tomme (CA) Inspired by Flemish Sours, but amped up quite a bit. A blend of brown ale, raisins, Belgian Candi Sugar and Sour Cherries, all aged in bourbon barrels for over a year. The barrels were inoculated with Tomme’s house Brettanomyces. Super rare & super good. 11%abv

Lost Abbey 24 Steps (CA) A special blond sour ale blended by Tom, Tomme & Felicia to celebrate Monk’s 20th Anniversary. We are super proud of this blend. 6%abv

Mikkeller Ginger Brett IPA (Denmark) IPA brewed with ginger and fermented with brettanomyces. 6.9%abv

Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Ale (Belgium) Our private label brewed for us outside Ghent, Belgium. Medium-body, red hue, fruity aroma, malt flavor with acetic & lactic sourness. A real thirst quencher. 5.5%abv

New Belgium Falling Monk (CO) Another of our 20th Anniversary beers, made in collaboration with Chris Black of Denver’s Falling Rock and the wood cellar crew at NBB. Flemish sour red-style, super dry, deep wood, no acetic acid.

Oxbow Buckwild (ME) A stainless-aged, mixed fermentation biére de garde with buckwheat. 7%abv

Oxbow Le Parrain (ME) A 20th anniversary blend of barrel-aged blonde, smoked and spontaneously fermented farmhouse ales, selected in collaboration with Mike Fava at Oxbow Blending & Bottling in Portland, Maine.

Tilquin Quetsche (Belgium) Pierre’s house aged lambic with the addition of a specific French plum – the Quetsche. One of my favorite fruit aged lambics

CIDER – TK

**Younger Day FAQ**

"What time should I get in line?"

Unless you plan to stake out a table (we pull all of the barstools to make enough space for everyone) there is absolutely no need to stand in line to get your Younger.  We always have enough. We'll be pouring beer from Noon-5pm and maybe even later.  Don't sweat it.

"Why are all draft beers cash only?"

We donate 100% of the listed price of all draft beers to our nonprofit partner, Alex's Lemonade Stand, so we don't want to pay credit card processing fees on the donation.  Cash only also speeds up service so everyone gets their beer faster.

"Can I buy a growler of Younger?"

Heck no.  We don't have a growler filling system and Russian River doesn't allow wholesale accounts to fill growlers. Good try, though.

"Can I have more than one Younger?"

We pour one Pliny the Younger for everyone in the house, and once everyone has had one, we will be able to offer second pours.
